Ryan's Adventures with SuSE Linux
Posted 2:10PM 15 Feb. 2004

Earlier this weekend I installed SuSE on an old computer my dad brought home. The computer wasn't extremely old-- a 450MHz Pentium III Gateway.

This is the first time I had worked with SuSE, normally I use RedHat or SlackWare. My brother David had purchased the professional version of the operating system on CD and DVD so I though I'd give it a try. Installation went very smoothly, it detected the video card, sound card, and ethernet card. Unfortunately, I didn't want it to use the ethernet card, I wanted it to use a Siemens 1022 USB wireless adapater.

I tried to configure the 1022, but I couldn't find any drivers for it, even after searching the web. What do you do when you have a working ethernet card and an unconfigured usb adapter? You wire the first floor with ethernet cable.

My dad and I spent hours getting it all set up and in the end our work paid off. I can access the intranet and the web and using LinNeighborhood and Samba, I can also access the other Windows hard drives in the house.

I added a few packages and programs, and now my sisters are even using the SuSE box. An extra laser printer we had was attatched through LPT1.
