Stars and stripes at study hall By Ryan Miller, Managing Editor Printed Sept. 16, 2005 in Crier Schools across Indiana are hearing a familiar oath recited each day, due to a Senate act that became effective July 1. The Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence, is now required to take place every day that public school is in session. According to this new legislation, flags must also be displayed in every classroom. Mr. Al Gandolfi, assistant principal, is making every possible stride to ensure the law is followed. Teachers were informed of the regulation at a meeting before the start of school. "I think the most important thing for us to do as administrators is to make sure everyone is aware," Mr. Gandolfi said. Although all schools are required to allocate time for the daily event, students are not required to participate. If they choose not to stand, students must remain silent and well-behaved. "If a student was consistently disruptive, that individual would be referred to the office," Mr. Gandolfi said. Some students' feelings differ on the proper way to express patriotism. Jessica Hilbrich, sophomore, chooses not to recite the Pledge. "I don't say it because I don't agree with our government, but I stand because our country should still be shown respect," Jessica said. |
